The view from the "look-out" (pulpit) shows how central this
spot was to Reformed worship. It is the only spot in the Meeting
House that has an unobstructed view to every angle and corner
of the church. From this spot the scripture to be expounded
upon was read. From the lower pulpit or "desk," the chief elder
(clerk of session) took attendance. The presenter led the congregation
in antiphonal Psalm singing ("liningbe" the Psalms).
Many of the 18th century's greatest preachers have spoken from
this spot including: Aaron Burr, Sr.Jacobus Frelingyhusen, Thomas
Dickinson, Gilbert Tennent, David Brainerd, George Whitefield,
Jonathon Edwards
The Meeting House continues to this day to a place of weekly
prayer and worship. |
